Few months back we went to Kuthambakkam to learn about the achievement of Mr.Elango(http://www.modelvillageindia.org). He shared lot of his experience. When we talked about water related issues Mr.Elango gave the information that the ground water level for his village is 5-10 feet. We just compared Vavipalayam panchayat's 1000 feet Ground water level.

What's to be done? Pray to rain god?? Wait for the Rain???

We are addressing the problem in 3 ways.

1. Rain water Harvesting

2. Construction of ponds and checkdams

3. Tree planting

The first 2 are drived by the Government. The second one is funded by the Government. so...as an NGO trying to fill the gap, we wanted to put more efforts and funds into Tree planting. We've planned to plant 2000 tree saplings in 90 days(Oct 1 - Dec 31).

Who will plant it? : College NSS students, Local youths, School Students.

Who will maintain it? : 1000 trees will be maintained by local youths and school students. 1000 trees will be maintained by an aged person in the village.

Requirement : 2000 Tree Guards
Purpose : To protect the tree sapling from goats and cows.
Cost : One tree guard costs Rs.100/-

FYI : Already we have planted 90 trees with the sponsorship of tree guards from forest department. Every year it is planned to plant and maintain 2000 trees.

Requirement : Bullock and Bullock cart with water tank
Purpose : To water the saplings. This will also be used to manage the water scarcity in some villages.
Cost : Rs.25,000/-

Requirement : Rs.36,000
Purpose : Salary for the aged person who maintain the 2000 trees
Cost : Rs.36,000 to maintain the tree for 2 years
